About the Campaign
What is the Smarter Small Buildings Campaign?
The Smarter Small Buildings Campaign offers technical assistance and recognition opportunities for improved HVAC controls that can save 10-20% in energy costs for small and medium sized buildings. We work directly with building owners and managers to reduce energy costs, improve occupant comfort, and meet sustainability goals. We also partner with technology vendors/manufacturers, HVAC contractors, utilities, and other organizations to help lower market barriers to improved building performance. The Smarter Small Buildings Campaign is sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, and managed by Berkeley Lab.
The Smarter Small Buildings Campaign is committed to assessing the reach of our efforts with regard to Energy Equity and Environmental Justice, and incorporating equity into our outreach and campaign deployment efforts.

Stairway to Better Buildings
Building owners have a range of rooftop unit (RTU) control capabilities beyond standalone, non-connected thermostats. Networked thermostats offer remote access, monitoring, and configuration for improved performance during occupied hours. Advanced controls enhance energy efficiency and air quality through additional sensors and optimized RTU operation. For those seeking further optimization, demand flexibility and dynamic control based on utility incentives are available. The Smarter Small Buildings Campaign supports your journey to the next level of building performance.
