Matthias Sulzer

Matthias Sulzer is the head of the Department of Engineering Sciences at Empa, a research institute within the ETH Domain. He also holds a visiting faculty appointment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the USA.
He studied building technology at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and completed a Master's degree at the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney with a specialization in energy economics. After returning to Switzerland, he co-founded a corporate group in energy and building technology, which he successfully took public.
In parallel, he worked at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, engaging in various research projects on decentralized energy systems, thermal networks, and energy-efficient buildings, where he earned the title of professor.
Over the last eight years, Matthias Sulzer has initiated and led national and international research projects on energy transition and decarbonization at Empa. His expertise includes system design and integration, system modeling, and complex decision-making processes. In addition to his research work, he supports various startups and shares his expertise with the next generation of entrepreneurs.
